Whether you're going across town or across the country, moving can be a stressful time. Below are some things to remember as you prepare for your move that can make the process go a little more smoothly.

Update your mailing address

  • Go to usps.com or fill out a change-of-address form at your local post office.

  • Plan ahead! Mail forwarding may begin within 3 business days of your request, but it can take up two weeks.

Change your address with important service providers

  • Start with your banks, credit companies, & magazine subscriptions.

  • Tell your job to update your address for their records and to make sure they have a forwarding address if you are changing jobs with your move.

  • Don't forget to update your shipping address for places you frequently shop online or order delivery from.

Create a list of people who will need your new address

  • Whether you are planning on a formal change-of-address notice in the mail or just a friendly e-mail to friends & family, make sure you let people know your new address.

Contact utility companies

  • Make sure you contact all of your new utility providers to set up service for your new home.

If you are buying a new home, you want to start your service the day of the closing.

If you are renting, make sure to set up utilities for the first day of your lease.

  • Don't forget to contact the utility companies to stop service at your old home and tell them where to send your final bill.

Unplug, disassemble, & clean appliances

  • Make sure any appliances (big or small) that are moving with you are properly disassembled and cleaned prior to moving. No one wants toaster crumbs getting all over their new home while they unload and unpack.

Pack an "open first" box

  • Make sure it has the items that you will need the most:

    • toilet paper
    • hand soap
    • towels
    • trash bags
    • chargers
    • box cutters & scissors
    • tools such as a hammer & screwdriver
    • pens & paper
    • cups & plates
    • water
    • snacks
    • basic toiletries

Extra tips if you're moving long distance

  • Obtain copies of important records from your doctors, dentist, pharmacy, veterinarian, and children's schools.

  • If you have a safe deposit box at a local bank, don't forget to empty it of your valuables and close the box.

  • Plan out your route and any overnight stops that you will need to make on the trip. Make sure to send a copy of the itinerary to a family member or friend.
