Having storage space in your home is an amazing feature. But having a storage space that is cluttered and unorganized can be stressful. Whether your storage is in an attic, shed, or garage, having a clean and organized space will make it easier to find things you already own and can even make more storage space available to you.

Here are some tips to make organizing go a little more smoothly:

  • Pick a Day (Or Weekend) A project this big is going to take time. Pick a day or a weekend to dedicate to the project so you don't end up feeling rushed through it or like you only got the job half-done.

  • Prepare Your Supplies Make sure you have everything you need for organizing and cleaning ready to go. This will probably include trash bags, a broom or shop vac, and some empty boxes or containers for sorting everything out.
  • Categorize Your Belongings Make three piles and categorize your items into each pile: keep, toss, and donate. Put things you are donating into an empty box to make it easier to donate later. Put things you are tossing directly into a garbage bag so there's no mistaking it as something you might keep.

  • Plan Your Space in a Way That Makes Sense to You You'll want to keep like items together, but make sure you organize it in a way that makes sense for you and your family. Items that you use regularly should be the most accessible while items that are used seasonally can be stored on a higher shelf or towards the back of the storage space.

  • Organize Vertically Maximize the use of your space by using things like shelving units, wall-mounted shelves, pegboards, and hooks. What equipment you use will depend on the space available to you.
  • Label Your Boxes Use a marker or label maker to label your boxes on a side that will be visible to you as you organize. This will make it easier to find things without tearing everything apart.

  • Actually Toss & Donate Items If you've set things into a pile to toss or donate, don't forget to follow through and actually toss or donate the items. Don't let them clutter up a new space just because you got them out of storage.

  • Make an Organizing Schedule Whether it's seasonal, monthly, or even weekly, make a plan to spend a day cleaning and organizing the space so you don't get overwhelmed again in the future.

No matter what size your storage space is, keeping it cleaned and organized can maximize the space you have available to you.
