Preparing for a new pet is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming! From curious kittens & mischievous pups, furry friends have a way of getting into all the places that you don't want them to go. But with a little prep work, you can make sure your home is a safe & welcoming space for your new animal friend.
Here are a few things to think about before bringing a new pet home:
- Secure Hazards
Like with young children, make sure your cleaning products and chemicals are securely closed and your pets cannot get into them. If your new critter seems especially curious, consider child-proof locks on your cabinets.
Trash cans are another big temptation for pets. Choose bins with secure lids and make sure you know what foods can be harmful to your pets so they don't snag any fallen scraps.
- Manage Cords & Outlets
If your pet likes to chew on things, electrical cords can be a big temptation! Tuck them out of reach, use cord covers, or find a pet deterrent that will keep them away from your wires.
And if your pup or kitty seems especially interested in electrical outlets, consider outlet covers to keep them safe.
- Choose Pet-Safe Plants
Many common houseplants are actually toxic to pets including lilies, philodendron, and pothos. Check that the plants you have in your home are safe for pets and move unsafe ones out of reach.
- Watch Out for Small Objects
Buttons, coins, small batteries, sewing needles and children's toys are all potential choking hazards if swallowed. Make it a habit to keep small items off the floor and clean thoroughly after craft projects and playtime.
- Be Mindful of Windows & Balconies
Open windows & balconies can be a significant risk for adventurous pets. Make sure you have study screens on any windows that you open to prevent falls or escapes. If you have a home with a balcony, make sure your pet cannot slip through the railings or jump over the edge.
- Keep Medicine Out of Reach
Pets are curious and will sniff out things that they shouldn't, like your medications. Keep your medications and supplements in a secure spot and take care to not drop anything on the floor.
- Create Their Safe Space
Every pet needs a quiet, cozy spot where they can feel safe and secure. Whether it's a designated space in a room, a comfy bed in a closet, or a crate filled with their favorite things, having a safe retreat can ease their transition to your home. You may even find that it becomes their go-to spot when they encounter storms outside or new guests in their space.
Our pets rely on us to keep them safe. A little preparation can make all the difference in helping them feel right at home.
